Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy
There is an amazing “new” treatment on the market which is actually not new but hundreds of years old – with brand new technological advancements to meet today’s needs. This treatment is called Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) and it is revolutionary in physical therapy and natural healing.
500 years ago, magnetized pieces of the mineral “magnetite” were used to treat a variety of conditions, from epilepsy to diarrhea. Later, in the 19th century, magnetic ointments were produced to cure a wider spectrum of ailments including headaches, toothaches and burns.
In 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved PEMF as a safe procedure. The treatment has been used for long-term chronic pain sufferers, as well as post operative for patients who have undergone spinal fusions. This technology, while it has been around since the 16th century, is still being explored as to its many uses and cures. Many documented trials have been performed by physiotherapists, rheumatologists and hospitals and the success of PEMF has been proven.
The body is an environment composed of both chemical and electrical fields and at any one time we are only as healthy as our cells can be in that environment. Cells are like an electric battery; subject to states of charge or depletion. Electricity trumps chemistry. If the cell was energetically weak, the invading organism could win this vibration contest, thus infecting the cell.
We have entered an era where we can, by way of technology, broadcast healing electromagnetic fields; bringing our cells into a state of balance; empowering the electrical-field of each cell and thereby creating strength and protection from the invasion of disease-causing pathogens.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy can be optimized to the correct frequency of vibration to affect the whole system and its long-term use has many benefits. PEMF returns lost energy and lost cellular balance to a normal, healthy state of vibration. Because of this, the entire cellular metabolism is boosted, blood cells are regenerated, circulation is improved and with more oxygen, the immune system is strengthened, nutrients are better absorbed, the respiratory system becomes more efficient, the nervous system is relaxed, the bones become stronger and more dense and vital organs such as liver, kidneys and colon are able to cleanse, ridding themselves of impurities and regaining their designated bodily functions.
Although many people are aware that the planet Earth gives off its own magnetic field, many do not know that this particular magnetic field varies as time passes and that it has an intensity and frequency which propels all life. The Earth’s electro-magnetic fields help a bird navigate and a bee find its hive. It also helps planes navigate the airways. But much more than that, the EMF, (electro-magnetic fields), propel life on Earth and affect the very core of existence for all animals. The first evidence of the need for pulsed electromagnetic fields was actually discovered after the very first launch of a human into orbit around the Earth. Russian Yuri Gagarin went into space in the early 1960s and orbited our planet once and then returned. When he came back from that historic trip, Yuri unfortunately experienced symptoms of depression, diminished metabolism, reduced perception, bone tissue loss, and even muscle tissue deterioration. Yuri was only without the PEMF of Earth for one hour and forty-eight minutes. It is easy to see what prolonged PEMF deprivation could do to a person. After Yuri’s illnesses, research has confirmed human cells deprived of pulsed magnetic fields will die very quickly. PEMF is absolutely a vital element of human life; in fact many researchers have started referring to PEMF as “The Fifth Element.” Along with food, water, oxygen and sleep, the body needs PEMF to survive.
PEMF therapy is like recharging the batteries in every cell. Studies have demonstrated that the average voltage of a normal, healthy, human cell is between 70 and 110 millivolts. Researchers have also discovered that when a person gets sick, the voltage of their cells drop drastically and is usually about 50 millivolts or even less. And serious conditions can cause the voltage of cells to drop even more – to 30 millivolts or less. So PEMF therapy works to recharge those sick or otherwise unhealthy cells, back up to a healthier 70 to 110 millivolts.
Enhancing microcirculation and oxygenation, PEMF supports nerve tissue re-growth and has astounding results when used for the management of pain, along with a variety of other health issues. Numerous studies have shown that PEMF therapy has been an effective aide for the healing of soft-tissue wounds as well as the suppression of inflammation related reactions at the cellular level in order to help alleviate pain, and even increase range of motion.
As a result of these studies combined with 20 years related experience, Human Therapy, LLC. engineered a portable and affordable PEMF therapy machine – an alternative and holistic approach to helping the body heal faster. The benefits of PEMF Therapy does so much to restore your cells to their normal healthy state that it also makes your immune system stronger and helps your body rid itself of impurities that toxify it. It will speed up your recovery time without any side effects. So if you suffer from chronic discomfort or have a sports injury or want to improve your athletic performance, pulsed electro-magnetic field therapy will bring your body back to optimum health.
The use of magnetic field therapy in clinical applications dates back over 500 years. In the 15th century, Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelsus used lodestones, or naturally magnetized pieces of the mineral magnetite, to treat conditions such as epilepsy, diarrhea, and hemorrhage. He believed that the ability of magnets to attract iron could be replicated by attracting disease away from the body. In the late 18th century, the Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer, who originated the idea of “animal magnetism”, described the healing properties of passing magnets over the open veins of patients. In the mid-19th century, magnetic ointments produced in New York were introduced as remedies for a whole spectrum of illnesses such as headaches, inflammation of the bowels, burns, fever sores, rheumatism, gout, and toothache.
Although electricity’s potential to aid bone healing was reported as early as 1841, it was not until the mid-1950s that scientists seriously studied the subject. Fukada’s and Yasuda’s discovery of the electric potential of bone provides evidence of electricity’s effect in promoting osteogenesis (bone growth), particularly in long bone non-unions. During the 1970s, Bassett and his team introduced a new approach for the treatment of delayed fractures, a technique that employed a very specific biphasic low-frequency signal to be applied for non-union/delayed fractures. The use of electrical stimulation in the lumbosacral region was first attempted by Alan Dwyer of Australia. In 1974, he reported successful initiation of graft incorporation in 11 of 12 fusion patients. Since that time, electrical stimulation has been shown to significantly increase the probability of bony arthrodesis in spinal fusions.
In 1979 the FDA approved non-invasive devices using pulsed electromagnetic fields designed to stimulate bone growth. In 1991, PEMF Therapy was approved in the US for adjunctive use in the palliative treatment of postoperative pain and edema in superficial soft tissue. In 2004, pulsed electromagnetic field system was approved by FDA as an adjunct to cervical fusion surgery in patients at high risk for non-fusion.
The use of PEMF stimulation has been found to be safe. It has also been proven safe and effective in treatment of delayed union in long bone fractures and patients at a risk of non-union following spinal fusion surgeries. At the current time, the modality of treatment is not addressed by the USET and the FEI.
In 1974 it was demonstrated that a pulsed magnetic field applied across the site of a bone fracture can accelerate the healing process (BASSETT et al., 1974). The mechanism of osteogenesis is not clear, however the use of PEMF therapy as an adjuvant therapy for delayed- and non-union fractures was supported by empirical evidence collected through clinical studies.
PEMF therapy has been suggested to enhance healing of fractures that occur in patients with diseases such as diabetes, vascular insufficiency, and osteoporosis, and those taking medications such as steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The exact mechanism for fracture healing is unclear; however, it is thought that PEMF therapy causes biochemical changes at the cellular level to accelerate bone formation.
